  9. Endurance Run/Marathon Training; 5th in a Program Series.

Eventful results in "San Diego metro area" | 5 Jul 2008 | 6:45am GMT
Endurance Run/Marathon Training; 5th in a Program Series. UPDATED INFORMATION FOLLOWS: We are going to meet at the Robb Field Skateboard Park. Here is a map of how to get there. The meetup time is 6:45. You are welcome to join me for breakfast at the Old Town House Restaurant on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach. "How to cover a marathon in a training session, and not get totally thrashed in the process." "It is one thing to run a marathon. It is another thing to have a decent handle on the distance." This program is geared toward those that hope to someday run multiple marathons/ultras in the future, and patiently and decidedly work, over multiple months/years, toward that goal, (because you should resolve to running more than one, if you want to run one well). Of course, if you're considering running just one so that you can check it off your 'life's lists', you are more than welcome to join us during these sessions. There may be more than one of you out there reading this that if you give this program a try, you consequently may end up moving out of the latter camp into the former. Is this Galloway's program? Yes and no. It deviates from it as much as you want (and there is no fee). There are nuggets of key training principles that Galloway has a cool method of exploring, which we will try to follow. In these particular endurance training sessions, participants will strongly be encouraged to specifically follow Galloway's run/walk method (regardless of whether they feel like "dropping the bomb" that day). The overall average pace for participants (including the walking time) will fall in the range of 9:30-11:30 min/mile, depending on the participant's objectives and level. In running group sessions, egos can get in the way of accomplishing the originally set-out objective, so I'm specifically scheduling these 4 to 5+ hour endurance sessions that will employ the run/walk method. Participants will be encouraged to explore, through an experiential learning experience, the following topics of discussion: nutrition, glycogen depletion, blood chemistry, ph and hormonal balance, injury, recovery, stress, brain glycogen, periodization, base, anaerobic, aerobic, capillary beds, mitochondria, DOMS, MAF, free radical damage, walk/run ratio versus distance, "hitting the wall", etc. Beginners will work up to eventually covering at least a marathon in distance during these sessions. Advanced participants will eventually work up to covering an ultra-marathon (50k+) during the sessions. Initially, participants--particularly novice and beginners (less than two years of semi-serious running)--are encouraged to fully fuel-up prior to, and during the run. Main emphasis of the initial sessions is physical strengthening without radical disruption in blood ph. Participants are encouraged to wear heart-rate monitors, a powerful tool that can be used to evaluate the development of the aerobic system over time (after weeks/months of training). Recommended reading material for this program is Galloway's book: Marathon: You Can Do It! (You can preview it at the above link.) The book is just a basic superficial covering of "developmental endurance running". Although it may be postured as just a "beginner's book, in reality, it elegantly and concisely lays out key principles and methods without going deep into detail or the explanation behind them, but it does follow the "KISS" principle. We can experientially (lol) explore the main topics in more detail during the sessions. On our message boards, I go into detail discussing this Galloway program. Hope to see you out there, -John- ------------------- P.S. For the forseeable future, I've scheduled these endurance run/walk sessions roughly every three weeks. The dates, leading up to the AFC Half-Marathon on August 17, are:April 26, 2008 May 24, 2008 June 14, 2008 July 5, 2008 (my 25th anniversary in San Diego) July 26, 2008 ------------------- P.S.S. As always, in the words of Mr. Galloway himself: "Before you start a strenuous training program, be sure to get clearance from a doctor who knows the benefits of exercise."

  33. Jul 5, 2008: Madagascar Opening at North Coast Repertory Theatre

    Upcoming: San Diego Events | 2 Jul 2008 | 7:17am GMT
Written by J.T. Rogers, Directed by David Ellenstein "If you choose to vanish you probably won't be found" are the haunting early words in Madagascar. In one hotel room overlooking the Spanish steps in Rome, three Americans find themselves alone in three different periods of time. What ensues is a taut and challenging drama about purity and ideals. The disappearance of a loved one connects this sorrowful trio as each individual story of how and why they are here comes to light. The characters' stories weave back and forth contradicting, clarifying, and deepening the resonance of each as they unfold. This powerful new voice in the American theatre promises to deliver maximum impact in our intimate theatre. Opening July 5, 2008 at 8.00 pm.

Most popular events in the Music category within 50 miles of San Diego,CA | 24 Jun 2008 | 7:37am GMT
The multi-instrumentalist group Rusted Root integrated the Grateful Dead's jam-heavy rock with percussion influences based on the music of Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. The six-piece formed in Pittsburgh in 1990 with Michael Glabicki (vocals, guitar), Liz Berlin (vocals, percussion), Patrick Norman (bass, vocals), and Jim Donovan (drums, percussion) as the initial lineup, though John Buynak (percussion, winds) and Jim DiSpirito (percussion) joined later that year. Rusted Root's self-produced debut album When I Woke appeared in 1994 on Polygram. With support from college radio and a good buzz from the band's entrancing live show, When I Woke became quite successful in alternative circles during 1995-1996, especially with singles such as "Send Me On My Way" and "Ecstasy." In mid-1996, Rusted Root released the Evil Ways EP, a compilation of live tracks with the band's contributions to the movies Twister and Home for the Holidays. Rusted Root's second album, Remember, followed in October. Produced by Jerry Harrison, it reached the Top 40 in its first week of release. A self-titled LP followed in 1998. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide Guitarist, bassist, and vocalist Pete Francis Heimbold originally gained a cult following as one-third of the group Dispatch. Heimbold was all of 21 years old when he met up with guitarist/bassist/songwriter Chad Urmston and drummer Brad Corrigan at Middlebury College in Vermont, where the three formed a band under the moniker One Fell Swoop, but soon changed the name to Dispatch due to a St. Louis group also with the name One Fell Swoop. Between 1995 and 2001, Dispatch put out five releases and toured the East Coast and Midwest, regularly sold out shows, and developed a strong following. After six-odd years of touring, the group decided to take an extended hiatus and Heimbold seized the opportunity by cutting his first solo record, Untold. He chose to release the album under his first and middle name, Pete Francis (only slightly confusing fans of Dispatch), which served as a signal to the new direction he was taking in his songwriting. Untold was released to positive reviews in May of 2003. As an interesting side note, Pete Francis' father, Charles A. Heimbold, is the United States ambassador to Sweden. ~ Gregory McIntosh, All Music Guide
  45. Event: Sycuan presents Dark Lotus at House of Blues - San Diego, Mon, Jul 7 8:00p

Most popular events in the Music category within 50 miles of San Diego,CA | 23 Jun 2008 | 11:27pm GMT
The Detroit based hip-hop "supergroup" has a rather dramatic story to go along with the story of its membership, Dark Lotus was -- at its outset and at its core -- the result of a collaboration between Insane Clown Posse and Twiztid. With the announcement that each member -- Violent J, Shaggy 2 Dope, Jamie Madrox, and Monoxide Child -- would act as a "petal" of the lotus, and that there would be six petals on this particular "flower," speculation ran wild among Psychopathic Records' fan base as to who would be filling out those positions. While still a four-piece, however, Dark Lotus recorded the single "Echoside," which appeared on Insane Clown Posse's Amazing Jeckel Brothers. Shortly thereafter, it was made public that the fifth petal would be Blaze Ya Dead Homie. With Blaze entering into an on-again off-again period with ICP's label, it appeared that Esham the Unholy may be taking the fifth petal role, but Blaze soon returned and kept his spot. Eventually, a sixth petal was found when Violent J took the young rapper Marz on board after ICP's 2000 tour. With the formation in place, Dark Lotus released their debut full-length, 2001's Tales from the Lotus Pod. While response was good from the Juggalo camp, internal tensions were high, and soon Marz left the group. ABK came on board to fill in the vacancy, in addition to recording his own vocals on the reissue of the debut album, which was stripped of all Marz' work. In 2004, the "new look" Dark Lotus released their second album, Black Rain, but it was to be the last with ABK, who would leave in 2006 after the group's tour. It was assumed that Dark Lotus had finished, but in late 2006, it was announced that the group would indeed continue. In 2008, they returned with their third album, The Opaque Brotherhood. An EP was recorded and sold exclusively on the subsequent tour. ~ Chris True, All Music Guide

  47. Event: The Verizon VIP Tour starring Natasha Bedingfield with The Veronicas and Kate Voegele at House of Blues - San Diego, Sat, Jul 5 8:00p

Most popular events in the Music category within 50 miles of San Diego,CA | 23 Jun 2008 | 8:39pm GMT
The UK’s biggest female star, Natasha Bedingfield, is launching her first-ever headlining U.S. tour with a 20-city schedule that kicks off in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on May 21. The British songstress, whose albums have sold in excess of 6 million worldwide, has joined forces with Verizon Wireless to further connect with fans via mobile technology. Bedingfield, whose “Unwritten” was the first single by a British female to hit No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard pop chart in 19 years, has long made female independence and inspiration the subject of her songs. Her tour includes support from two strong female acts, the Veronicas and Kate Voegele. Tickets for Natasha Bedingfield’s Verizon VIP Tour are on sale at www.Livenation.com. In addition, lucky Verizon Wireless customers who download Natsaha’s content via their V CAST-enabled handsets will have a chance to win a pair of tickets sent directly to their phones. “Nothing is more exciting than taking it to the stage and performing my songs live,” Natasha Bedingfield says. “Having toured around the world, I couldn't be more thrilled to finally be embarking on my first tour of the U.S. with Verizon, who is always at the forefront of mobile technology and great new music. It’s going to be a wicked summer run.” “This is a tour that spotlights smart, strong young artists doing what they do best,” says Ed Ruth, director of digital music for Verizon. “Natasha Bedingfield, the Veronicas and Kate Voegele are representatives of a new generation of talented female artists speaking out on what’s important to them, and mobile technology is a big part of that movement. Verizon Wireless delivers the opportunity for all three artists to interact directly with fans, who can download their music, get tickets to the show and create an on-going dialogue with both before and after their performance.” Verizon Wireless extends the Natasha Bedingfield experience before and after each show by delivering the following at each venue: The Natasha Bedingfield Experience Customers who download Natasha Bedingfield music, ringtones or ringback tones will be automatically entered into a sweepstakes, and twenty customers will win a chance to meet Natasha in person. These lucky winners will enjoy a special session with Natasha as she takes group photos, performs acoustically and answers fans’ questions. It’s the ultimate backstage experience. Duet Contest Fans will have a shot at their 15 minutes of fame with the “Pocketful of Sunshine” Duet Contest. By creating a thirty-second video or audio clip of their rendition of “Pocketful of Sunshine,” fans can submit their video online to become one of the finalists at www.VerizonVIPtour.com. Five finalists per concert city will record their duet on Verizon Wireless’ mobile recording studio bus. Entries will be judged by Natasha, and the grand prize winner will be selected to record a duet with her and perform live onstage in front of family and friends. Green Screen At select shows, fans have the opportunity to star in a music video with an image of Natasha virtually via a green screen. Fans can choose to appear as though they are performing “Pocketful of Sunshine” with Natasha. Video clips will be sent directly to fans via their mobile phones to share with their friends. Mobile Tickets Verizon Wireless customers in each of the tour cities who have downloaded any type of Natasha Bedingfield mobile content from V CAST will be entered for a chance to win one of 25 pairs of tickets. These loyal customers and fans will receive a mobile ticket sent directly to their phones that is good for two seats to the hottest show in town. Song ID Song ID Stations will be set up at each venue to demonstrate to fans how to use V CAST Song ID to listen to any Natasha Bedingfield song and discover the title, artist and album info for free. Fans can identify any song and then easily purchase it, the matching ringtone or ringback tone with just one click. The Natasha Bedingfield VIP tour is in support of her latest album, Pocketful of Sunshine, which has already spawned the hit singles “Love Like This” (featuring Sean Kingston) and the title track. Her first album, Unwritten, made her something of an overnight success in the UK and Europe with Top 10 hits, “Single,” “These Words” and the title track. Bedingfield has taken the U.S. by storm as well, especially with Pocketful of Sunshine, which was No. 3 on Billboard’s Top 200 during its first week, making it the highest album debut of her career. “Unwritten” was the most played song of 2006/2007 and is the theme song for the hit MTV show “The Hills.” The Veronicas, 23-year-old Australian twin sisters Lisa and Jessica Origliasso, have become major stars thanks to their catchy pop-punk debut album, 2006’s The Secret Life Of… which has sold over 1 million units worldwide and their latest CD, the electro-rock Hook Me Up, which will be released in the U.S. by Sire Records this summer. With its minimalist beats, killer hooks and sassy vocals, Hook Me Up has already scored two Top 5 singles and gone multi-platinum Down Under. A welcome addition to Natasha’s tour, the Veronicas have received raves for their recent live shows in Los Angeles and in New York. As Blender.com noted of an April show in Manhattan, “These girls can sing. And they flip off rock-star moves with the ease of stadium-trained pros.” Entertainment Weekly recently spotlighted Kate Voegele as being among the best of “the new golden age of female singer-songwriters” and Billboard hailed her as “An Artist to Watch in ’08.” And with good reason: Voegele’s MySpace/Interscope debut, Don’t Look Away, is generating major heat, going Top 5 on Billboard’s Digital Album Chart. In addition, the number of song plays on Voegele’s MySpace page has hit the jaw-dropping 15 million-plus mark. Voegele, who has shared stages with the likes of Dave Matthews, the Wreckers and John Mellencamp, performed at two consecutive Farm-Aid concerts and played to packed houses at clubs and theaters nationwide, has a recurring guest-starring role on The CW Network’s hit TV series “One Tree Hill.” The 21-year-old singer-songwriter/guitarist plays Mia, and over the course of a recent multi-episode arc, performed several songs from her strikingly radiant album, including the lead single “Only Fooling Myself.” Fans can download Natasha’s songs, including her latest single, “Pocketful of Sunshine,” as ringback tones, true tones and full-song downloads, both over-the-air and on their PCs via V CAST Music. Customers will be charged $1.99 per megabyte for data usage when downloading ringtones or ringback tones. However, megabyte pricing is not charged for downloading music, or text, picture and video messaging.
